Nicaragua

Nicaragua mapNicaragua is a Central American country rich in traditional art and biological rarities, such as the world’s only fresh-water shark. After years of conflict, Nicaragua’s economy is beginning to recover. However, its continuing development is under threat from a rising HIV/AIDS rate.

Nicaragua’s developing health care system faces HIV/AIDS-related challenges. IntraHealth works in Nicaragua through USAID’s Capacity Project to:

  • Train the faculty of regional health professional schools on preventing HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination
  • Improve the access of health providers and universities’ faculty and students to current HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis knowledge and tools through the Internet
  • Support the decentralization of HIV care and treatment through health staff performance improvement activities
  • Improve supervision and human resource management systems.
