Malaria is the most common life-threatening infection in the world, and is responsible for over one million deaths a year. Almost 90% of those cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa, and the majority of the deaths are among African children under the age of five.
IntraHealth has malaria programs in Rwanda and Senegal and develops interventions for the most vulnerable populations: pregnant women, young children and people with HIV/AIDS. Among the malaria prevention strategies currently available with the widest potential impact are insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying and intermittent preventive treatment. IntraHealth uses these prevention approaches, along with home-based management strategies and integration of services, to reduce clinical malaria episodes and create sustainable care for populations affected by malaria.
